Sam Ruston

SPEECH & LANGUAGE THERAPY ASSISTANT / NEURO REHAB ASSISTANT

Throughout her career, Sam has been driven by a deep-rooted passion to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives—particularly those facing complex communication challenges. With a calm, compassionate, and imaginative approach, she strives to support, encourage, and enable individuals to live with dignity, confidence, and independence.

Sam’s journey began when she established her own domiciliary care company, where she worked closely with clients living with dementia, stroke-related impairments, and other age-related conditions. This hands-on experience gave her invaluable insight into the profound impact that communication difficulties can have—not just on individuals, but on their families and wider communities. She quickly learned how to adapt, listen actively, and use creative strategies to connect with people in ways that went far beyond words.

Over the past five years, Sam has also volunteered with the Stroke Association, supporting their communication groups. This role has been incredibly rewarding and has deepened her understanding of aphasia and other post-stroke communication difficulties. It has confirmed her belief in the importance of patience, empathy, and tailored support in empowering people to find their voices again.

Now in her second year of studying Speech and Language Therapy at De Montfort University, Sam is finally pursuing what has been a lifelong ambition. The academic knowledge she is gaining is enriching her practical experience, and she is constantly inspired by the potential of evidence-based interventions to transform lives.

Everything Sam has done so far—whether running a care business, volunteering, or studying—has been fuelled by a desire to be a force for good in the lives of others. She is committed to continuing this path, and to becoming a speech and language therapist who brings not only clinical skill and academic understanding, but also genuine warmth, humanity, and creativity to every person she supports.
